Ways to perk up your rental kitchen

Just because you’re renting, it doesn’t mean you should have to live with a dull kitchen. Many landlords do not pay much attention to styling a rented kitchen because the renovations can be expensive. However, you can still lift a rental kitchen by adding all sorts of non-permanent extras.

Decorate cupboard doors

Cover up the doors of your kitchen cupboards if they are old fashioned, stained or simply not to your taste. Use patterned formica sheets or easily-removable stickers

Another option is to pick up some wallpaper remnants and cut them according to the size of the cupboard. Now stick them to the cupboard surface with removable double-sided tape.

Get some cheap and funky furniture

To make a boring kitchen colourful, get some funky stools or chairs; matching is not necessary. You can buy any chairs and paint them yourself when you come home with paint sealer.

Display your wares

Rental kitchens are normally small with insufficient storage space, so display cooking utensils on the kitchen bench top in an attractive holder. Decorate everything in an organized manner to reduce the effect of storage crises.

Use the fridge as a blank canvas

Cover your fridge with cardboard covered in chalkboard paint to give you somewhere to write your shopping list. Or cover the fridge with lots of memories, using magnets, photos and drawings. Do not do anything which cannot be removed later.

Get vertical

To get rid of the storage problem, hang racks from the ceiling. You can hang plenty of things like pots, pans, utensils and aprons. Otherwise, all these items will take up valuable storage space.

Rent appliances

Hire a new dishwasher if your landlord does not provide you with one. It’s good not to have to compromise on a dodgy one and you can hire them week-to-week, or for a whole year.

Give it a spring a clean

Apply a thorough scrub to your rental kitchen. Clean the corners and crannies with a toothbrush. Clean your oven too and don’t forget to mop and dust everything.

Accessorise

For the bench top, buy some pretty tea towels or tea canisters. Put pictures on the walls. Accessorize your old dull counters with a beautiful tea kettle or vase of flowers.
